Project Overview

The BIF III Holtwood LLC, Holtwood Hydroelectric Project (Holtwood Project) (FERC No. 1881) is located at river mile 25 on the Susquehanna River in Lancaster and York Counties in Pennsylvania. The Holtwood Project was constructed in 1905 and started operation in 1910 by the Pennsylvania Water and Power Company. In 2015, Brookfield Renewable (Brookfield) took over ownership of the Holtwood Project. The Project consists of a 2,392-foot-long by 55-foot-high concrete gravity dam, two powerhouses, an impoundment, tailrace, and fish lift. The impoundment, Lake Aldred, extends approximately eight miles upstream, to the base of the Safe Harbor Hydroelectric Project (FERC No. 1025). As issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC or Commission), the Project operates under FERC License No. 1881 by the licensee, BIF III Holtwood LLC. BIF III Holtwood LLC will be pursuing a new license for the Project through the Commission’s Integrated Licensing Process. The current license for the Project, which was issued on August 14, 1980, expires on August 31, 2030.
